Corporate Social Responsibility

We take Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) extremely seriously here at The Mermaid and have a clear strategy in place. It governs every area of our work, including our impact on the environment, the communities where we operate and our role as a responsible employer.

Our environmental commitment

We are committed to improving our environmental performance and reducing our environmental impact whenever and wherever possible. This includes policies to:

  • Recycle materials such as paper, cardboard, toner cartridges, batteries, office furniture, computer items, wood, metal, light bulbs, food waste, kitchen fats and oils
  • Use LED and low energy light bulbs
  • Use environmentally safe and sustainable energy sources whenever practically possible
  • Conserve resources through careful planning and efficient use
  • Work with our suppliers to ensure they too are doing all they can to reduce environmental impact of their businesses.
  • In August 2009 we were awarded silver from the Green Tourism for London Association. In January 2010 the Corporation of London recognised our waste minimisation and recycling initiatives by awarding The Mermaid a "Premier Award" and "the Chairman's Cup" which saw us succeed against hundreds of other businesses in the city for recognition of our strategies.

  • As a consequence of this, we are committed to continuous improvements in environmental performance and the prevention of pollution wherever and whenever possible. It is our intention to increase the awareness of green alternatives to organisers and would like the opportunity to talk over with you ways in which your needs may be met in a greener way. Below are some examples of positive activities:
  • electronic registration and re-usable name badges
  • web hosting of agendas and speaker notes
  • audio event recording or use of audio/video/webcasting conferencing
  • selecting food from the seasonal section of the menu
  • use of jug tap water rather than bottled mineral
  • minimising the waste of pre-printed resources
  • purchasing carbon offsets
  • ensuring the delegates are aware that their event has been arranged to specifically reduce its environmental impact.

For more information please download "Greener Events - a guide to reducing the environmental impacts of conferences and seminars". This is a government written strategy which aims to help organisers who wish to look for the greener options available.

Our equal opportunities commitment

We are committed to promoting equality in all areas of employment so our people can progress to their full potential regardless or gender, disability, race, colour, marital status, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, age, religious or political affiliation. This means:

  • Respecting and valuing diversity
  • Promoting equality of opportunity in all areas of employment and the service we offer to our clients
  • Creating a harmonious working environment where discrimination has no part
  • Basing all employment and business decisions on merit
  • Building an environment where staff are able to achieve their full potential.
